Castle Rock creators reveal the mystery that hits Shawshank Prison
Just how scary is Castle Rock? Creators and executive producers Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason reveal Shawshank Prison’s mystery and break down what we can expect to see in the premiere on Hulu!
The Castle Rock premiere on Hulu is just days away, and over the weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, we learned more about the characters, storylines and Stephen King Easter eggs we can expect to find in the first few episodes of the series. We caught up with the show’s creators and executive producers, Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason, to try and find out as much as we could about this original series set within the Stephen King multi-verse.
A mysterious person in Castle Rock’s Shawshank Prison
Not much is known about the plot of the series, but we did learn about two major events that will unfold in the show’s premiere episode. “It begins with a kind of spectacular death that leads to the discovery in the bowels of Shawshank prison of an extra prisoner,” Shaw revealed. “The question of who he is, how he got there, and what his discovery is going to mean for this bedlam community of Castle Rock in the shadow of Shawshank.”
The extra prisoner we believe they’re referring to is the mysterious, nameless character played by Bill Skarsgard. “Those are all questions that get sort of teased out over the course of the season, but his discovery ropes in Andre Hollins’ character, Henry Deaver, who’s a kid who grew up in Castle Rock… and it becomes the occasion for Henry’s return to Castle Rock,” Shaw said.
So, just how scary is Castle Rock?

The horror genre hosts a very wide range of scary set-ups from psychological thrills, to macabre acts, to gory jump scares, and when asked how Castle Rock will utilize horror in their show, the creators confirmed they’re looking to run the gamut.
“Stephen King is a writer who kind of does it all, and part of what we wanted to do in this show was to deliver on the psychological suspense, the creepiness, and at times, the, hopefully, grab-you-by-the-throat scares,” Thomason explained. “In the early episodes, we’re building the world of Castle Rock and starting to understand who lives here, and who has stayed, and who comes back, and who tries to escape.”
He also commented on how the thrills don’t rely on extreme situations or supernatural elements. “I think that hopefully some of the horrors of being an everyday human are also kind of on the page through the characters,” Thomason said.
