Shadowhunters (finally) introduces Luke Baines as Jonathan reborn in season 3B

Jonathan is back in Shadowhunters season 3B, but he’s been reborn to his original form, and will be played by actor Luke Baines

Even though many fans have already figured out that actor Luke Baines would be playing Jonathan in Shadowhunters season 3B (thanks largely to social media and on-location shooting in Europe), Freeform formally announced his casting this morning, welcoming him to the show and to the ShadowFam.

So just to keep things straight, Will Tudor played Jonathan Morgenstern, who was impersonating Sebastian, who was actually played by another actor, and was then killed by Jace (his father’s other secret son), but now Jonathan has been revived by Lilith, and he’s been reborn in his original form, played by Luke Baines. Totally makes sense!

In the midseason finale, we saw Jonathan’s hand grab Clary after Lilith was successful in reviving him, but rather than take the familiar glamour (of Will Tudor), this Jonathan will look a bit different. Luke Baines’ character is being referred to as “Jonathan reborn” and we cannot wait to see him onscreen when Shadowhunters returns!

In his announcement video, which is largely just outtakes and laughter from himself and Kat McNamara, Baines shares his excitement for being able to join the series. “We have some wonderful stuff in store for you over the next 12 episodes,” Baines said. “You’re going to find out a lot more about why he feels the way he feels about Clary and his feelings on Jace.”

Joining the Shadowhunters series is much more than just working on the show itself, and Baines also expressed his excitement to be joining the fandom. “I know the power of this fandom, and I’m so excited to be part of it and to meet you all,” he said.
