6. Black Mass

Original Release Date: September 18, 2015

Box Office Earnings: $22,635,037 (USA opening weekend), $62,575,678 (USA gross)

Critical Acclaim: The movie won six awards and was nominated for 24. None of them were major international awards.

About the Role: Benedict Cumberbatch takes on another real character. This time he’s Billy Bulger, the brother of the crime boss-turned-FBI informant.

Simply the Best: There are many movies out there based on true stories and Black Mass is another. However, this one is based on one of the most infamous American mobsters, James “Whitney” Bulger.

Those who know how the real story ends, will know that it’s not a happy ending for Black Mass. The writing does stick to as close to the truth as possible, which is certainly refreshing. That doesn’t stop you from being drawn into the story, especially if you don’t know much about Whitney Bulger.
