Box Office:  During opening weekend, the movie grossed nearly $6 million at the box office. The lifetime gross of October Sky was $34,675,800 worldwide.

Reception: October Sky was as successful critically as it was financially. At Rotten Tomatoes, the review aggregator, the movie is Certified Fresh with 90 percent of review being positive and an audience score of 88 percent. Some critics even praised Gyllenhaal’s acting as a cornerstone of the film.

The Role: Based on the true story, Gyllenhaal takes on the role of young Homer Hickam who is inspired to take up building a rocket following the Sputnik launch. Despite his father’s wishes for him to abandon the hobby, Homer fights to accomplish his dream.

The Verdict: If you want to see that movie that got Jake Gyllenhaal started, then this is the movie for you. It’s a well-rounded family film that actually has something important to say. It also stars Chris Cooper and Laura Dern who play the adults opposite of Gyllenhaal’s character.
