Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix)

You wouldn’t think that a show about a kidnapping victim would be so wholesome and happy. The effervescent Ellie Kemper embodies Kimmy Schmidt, a woman who was held captive in a bunker since she was fifteen years old. Now in her 30’s, Kimmy is free and exploring what life is like on her own in none other than New York City. She quickly meets her tribe. Lillian (Carol Kane), a sassy sprite of a landlord, Tituss (Titus Burgess), a dramatic wannabe actor with a secret heart of gold, and Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski), a shrewd and fashionable society lady.

Kimmy Schmidt works so well at raising our spirits because unreasonable hope in the face of unthinkable adversity is literally the underlying theme of the entire show. No matter what the world throws at Kimmy, she picks her head up and holds it high, attempting to turn back the relentless tide of negativity one encounter at a time.

Where to Watch: Seasons 1 – 4A are currently available for streaming on Netflix. The final episodes (aka: Season 4B) will be released in January of 2019.

Bonus Squeeze: If you’re a guy or gal on the go, you might not always have time to watch an episode of TV. In a pinch for time? Tituss’ breakout music video “Peeno Noir” is a quick pick me up that’s bound to put a smile on your face.
