Introduce Wolverine as Captain America’s old war buddy

As was portrayed in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, James “Logan” Howlett looks really good for his age. Due to the character’s mutant healing factor, Wolverine ages incredibly slowly and though he has the appearance of a man in his 30s, he’s actually severally hundred years old. And is also depicted in X-Men: Origins best sequence, the Canadian mutant spent time-fighting in a number of significant global conflicts including World War II.

More from Marvel Movies

In a 1990 issue of Uncanny X-Men, it was revealed that Logan had a run in with Captain America in 1941. At that point, Steve Rogers was new to his new alternate identity and Logan was decades away from joining the X-Men. After getting acquainted, the two men teamed up to take on some Nazis and a contingent of Daredevil’s old foes the Hand. During the fight, the pair rescues a young Russian girl named Natasha, the future Black Widow. After pulling off a daring escape, the duo part as friends but don’t meet again until decades later at a proper superhero team up.

If and when Marvel chooses to produce a new Wolverine movie, the World War II team up story would make for a great cold open. It would introduce Logan into the MCU while also connecting him to two founding members of the Avengers and the Netflix Defenders franchise. In doing so, this would help differentiate this new Logan from the one played by Hugh Jackman. While that connection doesn’t need to necessarily be the focus of the first Marvel Wolverine movie, it would plant a lot of seeds for the future.
