James Gunn to be possibly reinstated by Disney? Sources have a growing feeling
By Tony Smejek
Could radio silence by Disney and Marvel Studios indicate they are reconsidering the decision they made about dismissing James Gunn?
James Gunn news has been through the litany of buzz as of late. The Guardians of the Galaxy cast members recently put out an adamant support of Gunn in having Disney rehire the director for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. All 9 digital signatures are prominent at the bottom of the document.
Now, Variety reports that there is a “growing feeling” among their sources that Disney could be bringing him back on board. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has as of yet to say anything and Variety attributes their silence as a possible indicator regarding some decisions being made.
Such a decision would be regarding replacing Gunn, but there is a time table to consider here. Variety reported that production is scheduled to start at the beginning of 2019 for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and if someone were to replace James Gunn, script changes would likely occur.

I was able to glean that Disney may be under the gun to make a decision regarding Gunn’s already finished script. Variety reported that Disney CEO Bob Iger is on vacation, and insiders with the trade said Disney won’t be able to move forward in any decision-making until he returns.
However, the Internet had their ideas of the outcome, whether it be that Disney has cemented their decision or that they had already planned on rehiring him.
James Gunn was planned to be rehired all along?
Some long time entertainment YouTuber’s gave their take. John Campea was speculating Disney could have planned on taking Gunn back since his firing. That they decided to sit down with him on the down low and have a discussion on where to go since this whole debacle.
Campea thinks maybe they’ll give Gunn the floor, and perhaps Disney could be convinced that he’s a changed man.
From John’s description, it seems like Hollywood’s version of sitting in front of a parole board.
Will Disney reconsider Gunn regardless of family friendly standards?
Grace Randolph, of Beyond the Trailer, was of the mind that Disney won’t budge based on their standards. Since Disney is geared towards children and a family friendly environment, their decision would be completely going against what the company stands for. Randolph feels James Gunn’s “judgement might still be suspect”. Also, she said there’s no coming back from those kind of comments.
I mean, you’re talking about a theme park that doesn’t allow for exposed tattoos on their employees. I think even this speaks volumes regarding their standards.
She expressed that it was his vehement political stance on Twitter that got James Gunn fired. So Grace was comparing his current Twitter attitude in the political realm to that of his tweets from 10 years ago. That nothing could change when it comes to James’ online behavior and he could remain consistent online as he was with Twitter account years ago.
If cast pushes Disney, Will They Scrub GOTG 3?
Grace Randolph thinks if the GOTG cast keeps pushing Disney to change their mind, the company could do away with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 altogether and just put the characters in an area of the MCU where they just make appearances here and there.
All that being said, do you think the nine cast members have enough star power to push Disney to reconsider, or do you think they had already planned on rehiring Gunn? Should Disney take into consideration their “Song of the South” past and compare it to the situation they have with Gunn?
