At a Digimon event in Japan, a new film was announced that will follow the events of Digimon Adventure Tri.

Digimon has officially celebrated 20 years of the Digital World, and after providing viewers with a whopping six films, there’s still plenty more Digimon on the horizon. The sixth film of Digimon Adventure Tri wrapped by (spoiler alert) killing the newest Digimon trainer’s companion in a surprisingly dark turn, still leaving a door open to continue the story.

Just a few days ago at a Digimon celebration, it was confirmed that the next title would be called Digimon Adventure the Movie with the series original producer Hiromi Seki attached to the project. In addition to Seki, most of those from Toei Animation who aided the Digimon franchise will also return for roles like character and monster designers.

The most interesting take away from the Digimon announcement was that it will be a more modern view, making a time-leap of five years. The Digimon Adventure Tri group were in their late teens the last we saw them, but for the upcoming film it has been stated that both Matt and Tai will now be 22. Taking the step towards telling a story with the same characters from the perspective of an adult (much like the original fans age group) shows that the franchise will expand into a much more evolved series than anyone anticipated.

There was also art showcased that was the basic character design for Matt and Tai, sticking very close to the art from the first series with an aged change of pace. At the moment, only the two lead characters have been confirmed but we can’t imagine the others like Kari or TK will be far behind.
