The Walking Dead: Chandler Riggs discusses Andrew Lincoln’s impending departure

Chandler Riggs worked alongside Andrew Lincoln for nearly nine years on The Walking Dead. Now, Riggs is opening up about Lincoln’s plan to leave the AMC-hit series.

Late last year, fans of The Walking Dead were shocked to learn that Carl Grimes had been bitten by a walker, sealing his fate on the series. As his death on the show was imminent, it didn’t occur until months later when season 8 returned from their midseason break in February. As viewers spent the midseason break speculating ways that Carl would survive the zombie bite, they quickly learned that this was truly the end of the line for the character.

At a Walker Stalker Convention in Orlando, Chandler Riggs, who played Carl since the series debut in 2010, spoke about his death scene. He also opened up about one of the major storylines surrounding the show’s upcoming ninth season–co-star Andrew Lincoln’s departure from the series.

Riggs had this to say in the interview shared by Comicbook.com:

"“He had to leave his family for seven months at a time. Having to leave and go to work. He would come over to the states and film for that long, every single year for nine years straight. It’s just insane.”More from AMCWhy is Fear the Walking Dead no longer streaming on Max?Interview with the Vampire season 2 release updates, strike delay, and moreHow many episodes is Carol on The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon?Orphan Black: Echoes release updates, trailer, cast and what else to knowDark Winds season 3 release updates, cast, and more to know"

Lincoln and Riggs grew a close friendship while working on The Walking Dead for eight seasons. Considering they portrayed a father and son, they had a unique bond with one another. Despite the fact that Riggs is no longer on the show, he assured fans that he remains close with his co-stars. He might have been late to the party regarding the news that Lincoln planned to leave the series, it certainly didn’t surprise the young star.

"“But we had talked about it about a year before. About him, what he wanted to do with his future. And it didn’t really involve the show.”"

Lincoln’s personal decision to leave the series far differs than what happened with Riggs. Many fans were extremely upset about the show’s decision to kill off Carl. The young Grimes is still a key character to the comic book series and was believed to be the cornerstone to the TV show’s future. Showrunner Scott M. Gimple has tried to justify the decision to get rid of Carl but most fans still don’t understand the reasoning.

Now with Carl gone and Rick soon to follow, there are no members of the Grimes family to lead the survivors. It will be interesting to see what direction the TV series takes now that its only option is to stray away from comics. Just because Andrew Lincoln is leaving the show, it doesn’t mean Rick will have to be killed. There are only a handful of original characters left so maybe the series can take a break from killing off beloved cast members.
