First look: Mary J. Blige set to appear in MTV’s Scream reboot
By Kara Hedash
MTV is planning to release the third season of Scream later this year. Today, the network announced Grammy Award-winning artist, Mary J. Blige, will appear in the reboot.
Back in 2015, MTV debuted a TV series based on the Scream film franchise. Loyal horror fans had mixed reviews about the show but were still eager to see how it played on the small screen. Last year, the network decided to move forward with a six-episode third season for the series but with a rebooted cast and setting. Most notable in the reboot is that Queen Latifah is serving as a producer under her company, Flavor Unit Entertainment.
Scream Season 3 is set to feature a cast of young and popular stars such as Tyga, C.J. Wallace, Keke Palmer, Giorgia Whigham, RJ Cyler, Jessica Sula, Giullian Yao Gioiello, and MTV vet Tyler Posey. The latest announcement gives the series even more star power as the multi-talented Mary J. Blige is said to be appearing in the Scream reboot.
Blige is certainly no stranger to acting. Her role in the 2017 Netflix film, Mudbound, received critical praise and garnered a number of prestigious award nominations. She has previously appeared in guest roles on shows like How to Get Away with Murder, Black-ish, and Empire but Scream will mark her first regular role. Blige will portray Sherry Elliot, the mother of the lead character, Deion (RJ Cyler). An official synopsis has also been released:

The majority of the complaints regarding the first two seasons of Scream focused on the appearance of Ghostface, especially the mask. Viewers will be happy to learn that the upcoming season will go back to the roots of the franchise. The original Ghostface mask from the film franchise has been announced to appear in the series. Actress Keke Palmer also shared that Roger L. Jackson, the original voice of the killer, is on board for season three.
As of now, there is no premiere date for Scream‘s third season but it is rumored to hit sometime in 2018. MTV is banking that the reboot will attract new and returning viewers so the network can continue their positive growth in ratings. Including someone like Mary J. Blige, who has a global fan following, will surely help viewership.
