The TNT series, The Alienist, is returning with the original cast in a second season titled The Angel of Darkness, based on Caleb Carr’s follow up novel

Early this year, TNT announced that their hit limited series, The Alienist, would become an anthology series if renewed for an additional season. Now that wishful season has finally been ordered by the network and it’s titled The Angel of Darkness.

Typically, an anthology television series has a new set of characters and plot lines each season, but TNT is using the term lightly. Other than its new name, it’s the same. Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans, and Dakota Fanning will reunite to play the same characters from season 1 and they’re ready to go Scooby-Doo on a new mystery.

The Alienist is based on the book of the same name by Caleb Carr (son of Lucien Carr), and part one of Carr’s Kreizler Series, about a criminal psychologist known as an “alienist” who hunts down the sadistic murderer of boy prostitutes in late 19th-century New York City. The series has been nominated for six Emmy’s including one for Outstanding Limited Series. Despite its second season renewal the show will apparently remain in the category.

Spoilers ahead for those who haven’t read the books!

The second season will be an adaptation of the next book in the Kreizler series, “Angel of Darkness”, a thriller set during the incoming Spanish-American war about the kidnapping of a visiting Spanish diplomat’s infant daughter. The investigation ends up leading them to a terrifying suspect; a nurse and a loving mother who may be a child murderer hiding in plain sight. It’s titled “Angel of Darkness” which could be a twist on Angels of Death/Mercy, the name given to serial killers (usually women) who kill people in their care to “save” them from pain.

There is a total of three published books in the Kreizler series, a fourth book titled “The Alienist at Armageddon” expected to be released in 2019 and a fifth book titled “The Strange Case of Miss Sarah X” with an unknown publication date. It’s possible that TNT is going to adapt the entire series, giving them the chance to craft an incredible anthology that not only uses historical backdrops but also allows them further use of the original characters.

If Carr doesn’t release that last book in time, then they could also have a Game of Thrones issue on their hands. The third book changes protagonists, so it might be wise not to get attached to the main trio. Carr’s third novel in the series, “Surrender, New York” jumps ahead more than a hundred years to 2016 and focuses on another criminal psychologist, Dr. Trajan Jones, who is well knowledgeable with Dr. Laszlo Kreizler’s life and work.

It’s not been said when the season is expected to air, but it could be sometime next year or in early 2020. Go to TNTdrama.com to catch up with season 1 before The Angel of Darkness airs, or read Carr’s book so you’ll be well informed of the investigation, or not if you want to be surprised.
