7. American Gangster

Original Release Date: Nov. 2, 2007

Box Office Earnings:  $43,565,135 (USA opening weekend), $130,164,645 (USA gross)

Critical Acclaim: American Gangster received two Oscar nominations and three Golden Globes nominations. In total, it won 12 awards and was nominated for 37.

About the Role: Josh Brolin plays Detective Trupo, who becomes an enemy of Frank Lucas throughout the movie. He’s also a dirty cop and you know you don’t want him to succeed in anything that he does. Of course, there are no good guys in this movie! Trupo is there to show the desperation as everything crashes down, making him an essential character in the story.

Simply the Best: This was one of those movies that didn’t live up to expectations but does that make it a bad movie? Definitely not. What’s important to note is that expectations were high due to the star-studded cast and overall it just didn’t match up. However, Josh Brolin held his own amongst the names, including Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe.

The movie took on the story of real gangster Frank Lucas and developed a somewhat familiar tale. However, this Ridley Scott movie has the devil in the detail that is easily missed the first time you watch it. Try it a second time and then make up your mind.

Also, despite the movie not meeting expectations, it did at least make a profit. That’s more than can be said for a few other movies on this list!
