S4E2 – “Breathe”

Cameo-ish: Again, no cameos exactly, but there are plenty of Breaking Bad characters that pop in and out of the episode. The creeptastic Salamanca twins stand vigil over Hector’s hospital bed, Gus’s personal doctor, Dr. Goodman, sneaks in to check on the stodgy old gangster, Juan Bolsa checks in with Gus, and Gus’s henchmen Victor and Tyrus preside over a horrific killing. It’s all just another day, another million drug dollars for the cartel.

The Story: Despite the fact that we don’t see any new cameo faces, we do see Gustavo Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) begin to execute a gigantic power play that will irrevocably alter his status as it relates to the cartel. It’s a move that directly echoes all the way into the Breaking Bad timeline in myriad ways. The man is nothing but an innovator, but this episode illustrates that his calm and collected demeanor serves as an effective cover for a roiling pit of revenge fueled rage that constantly bubbles beneath the surface.
