15. The End

Supernatural Season 4 took Dean to the past. Season 5 took him to the future. Episode 4, titled “The End,” gave us a stark look at what was to come. The more Dean held off saying yes to Michael, the more Lucifer would win.

We get to see some very different characters in this episode. Castiel, for one, is human and interested in all things sex. Sam has said yes to Lucifer. Future Dean is hardened and ruined from war and regret. Whether this is a real future or just one manipulated by angels is never fully clear, but it’s an important future nonetheless.

There are a lot of reasons to hate Future Dean. He sends his friends off to die, knowing they’re going on a suicide mission. It’s hard to feel bad when he’s killed. But that’s not the main focus of the episode.

Most importantly, and the reason this episode is so high up on the list, is that Dean learns an extremely important lesson. It’s not that he needs to say yes to Michael, but that his brother isn’t his weakness. They’re stronger when they’re together and that’s the way it needs to stay. They need one another to remain human.
