12. Death’s Door

One of the most heartbreaking episodes is still Supernatural Season 7, Episode 10. The midseason finale for the season gave us the worst death up to this point. We lost the man who had been a father to the Winchesters; the guiding light and a force to be reckoned with.

And it was all because of Dick. He fired a couple of bullets and one just happened to stick.

Bobby’s death remains heartbreaking. No matter how many times I watch it, I’m in tears. It’s not just the loss of the character, but the way we get the goodbye.

“Death’s Door” doesn’t just have us say a goodbye to a body and send the Winchesters on their way. Bobby fights like Hell to get back to his boys and goes through memory after memory to fight. He needs to get a message to them, even if it means his life is over afterward.

Through the memories, we get Rufus. Those two were the perfect partnership (and I’d still be completely up for a prequel spin-off with these two) and having Rufus there to help guide Bobby to the afterlife was a bittersweet touch.

The memories themselves are also beautiful. For years, we’d seen the impact Bobby had on the Winchesters. He was the fountain of knowledge and someone who wanted the boys to be boys as well as good hunters. what we never saw was the impact the Winchesters had on Bobby. Every memory was those two boys.

That final memory was everything and more. Of course, now we know it wasn’t the last we’d see of Bobby, but it would have been the perfect way to write out his character.
