True Detective Season 3 trailer: First look at Mahershala Ali in the series
About four years ago, the first episode of the weird, dark, and powerful series True Detective premiered on HBO. The second season fell short of expectations despite greater star power. Now, the first official trailer for season 3 has been released and promises a return to form.
In 2014, the first season of True Detective both impressed and unsettled audiences with subtle nuance from creator Nic Pizzolatto. The clever duo of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson made for some unmissable television. After the second season failed to live up to the towering first season, fans began to lose interest in the True Detective story.
When HBO announced that Academy Award Winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) would be joining the cast of the upcoming season, however, people began resubscribing to the idea of another season. On Sunday, HBO surprised many viewers with a brief look into the story for the upcoming season.

Ali is geared up to play Detective Wayne Hays, a police detective in Northwest Arkansas. Alongside, the actor will be Stephen Dorff (Immortals) and Carmen Ejogo (Selma), who play an Arkansas State investigator and a school teacher respectively. Other actors include Josh Hopkins, Scoot McNairy, Mamie Gummer, Rhys Wakefield, and Ray Fisher.
Here is the brief synopsis for Season 3 available on HBO’s website:
"Partner detectives investigate a macabre crime involving two missing children in the heart of the Ozarks, Arkansas. The story spans three decades."
The first trailer demonstrates the multi-decade story arc with flash forwards and Ali visibly aged. There is a secret which plagues Wayne Hays during these years, likely becoming a focal point in the series. Ejogo’s character can be seen in the trailer asking Hays, “did you think you could just go on, and never once have to look back?”
An eerie question, which sets the tone for the remaining imagery of the trailer.
Pizzolatto has earned writing credits on all eight episode of season 3 and shares a co-writing title with David Milch (Deadwood) on episode 4. Additionally, Pizzolatto will finally make his way into the director’s chair for the new season. Green Room director Jeremy Saulnier is also poised to direct some episodes.
Season 3 of True Detective will premiere some time in January 2019 on HBO.
