Better Call Saul season 4, episode 4 recap: Mike shines
Better Call Saul shows Jimmy getting a new job, but it’s Mike who is the star of this week’s episode.
Better Call Saul starts us off with a flashback to Matty writing his name in cement. Then, we see Mike in present day at one of his group meetings. Meanwhile, Jimmy declines a job offer and then turns around and tells Kim that he got the job he just declined. However, he does make a call right after she leaves to inquire if the job is still available.
Kim goes to the court to observe and Judge Munsinger calls her into chambers and tells her that what she’s doing is essentially pointless. However, she keeps doing it anyway as she’s looking for something more than what Mesa Verde can offer her.
Anita meets Mike at the diner and they discuss another man in their group, Henry. Anita wants to reach out, but Mike informs her that his story is fake and tells her to watch for his tell (he rubs his wrist). It’s a nice little moment and it is good to see Mike interacting with someone who isn’t a criminal or his family.

The more criminal element of this show sees a lot more action than Jimmy does at his new job at CC Mobile. After a drug deal early on in the episode, we see the twins go into some sort of sketchy compound guns blazing as they leave Nacho in the car. Nacho doesn’t stay put though and reopens one of his wounds trying to help, even though it isn’t needed. They then steal the drugs that were delivered earlier.
Nacho reports back to Gus, who orders him to get some rest because he still has some more work to do. Things turn back to Mike as he, Anita, and Stacey comment again about Matty (who Stacey brought up in group). Mike calls Henry out and he doesn’t deny what Mike is accusing him of, instead he just leaves.
Mike is summoned for a meeting with Gus and he isn’t afraid of him one bit like many others are. Mike is too observant to really be afraid of anyone, it seems. He’s well aware Gus has a job for him. Unfortunately, we don’t get to find out what it is. Mike is ruthless in this episode even though he mostly remains calm the entire time. He doesn’t have to harm anyone physically to be ruthless, though, and that’s what makes him a great character.
It’ll be interesting to see how long Jimmy’s job at CC Mobile lasts, since it is clearly quite boring even as he tries to spice it up. “Privacy sold here” will certainly attract some sort of clientele, but maybe not the kind he really wants. However, he did make some money from that Hummel figure, so he can relax a bit on that front.
Better Call Saul airs on Mondays on AMC at 10:00 PM EST.
