The Force is about to get wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey! Matt Smith, the 11th Doctor himself, will be joining the cast of Star Wars: Episode IX.

What does one do after they have explored the galaxy in a TARDIS? They explore a galaxy far, far way in the Millennium Falcon. That is if they are Matt Smith.

Little is known about the former Doctor Who star’s upcoming role in the next Star Wars film other than the fact that it will be a “key role” as reported by Variety. It is unknown if he will actually be aboard the Millennium Falcon, but it is fun to imagine!

Smith’s casting is just the latest in recent casting news for the Star Wars franchise. At this time there is little information about his character, but that hasn’t stopped the internet from trying to predict what role he may be playing. These are just some of the possibilities:

Though Smith is best known for his portrayal of the 11th Doctor, he has also taken on some darker roles. It would be entirely possible that the latest film in the franchise will see him allied with the First Order rather than the heroes.

Perhaps his character will even be connected to General Hux. Having Matt Smith share scenes with Domhnall Gleeson would be a treat.

A Force-sensitive individual

With the ending of The Last Jedi, it was revealed that Luke Skywalker would not be the last Jedi and that there were other force-sensitive individuals out there in the galaxy. What was shown in the film was only children, but it’s possible that adults could become force sensitive later on as well. Smith’s role could potentially be a force sensitive character who joins the rebels and ends up helping Rey, Finn, and Poe on their quest.

Rey’s Relation

Speaking of Rey, it is very unlikely that the film will not divulge at least a little more information on her background, given that it was such a driving force for her character. There is also the fact that many audience members were not 100% convinced when Kylo Ren told her that her parents were nobodies.

However, if her parents are in fact characters that we have yet to meet it may not be entirely implausible that the character Matt Smith will play could be related to Rey. Her long-lost father perhaps? It may sound crazy, but crazier things have happened.

An Alien

Given his turn as the 11th Doctor, it is fair to say that Matt Smith obviously has experience playing an alien. He was arguably one of the most popular incarnations of the time traveling Timelord and it would not be surprising if Star Wars wanted to capitalize on this and give Smith the role of an alien. There could be so many Doctor Who references to come from that!

Would you like to see Smith take on the role of another alien or would that be too much like Doctor Who? What role do you think he is most likely to play?

More about his particular role in the film will be revealed in the months leading up to the release of the trailer and the film which is slated for December 2019. We’ll just have to wait until then to learn more!
