Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will have an episode inspired by The Exorcist

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is taking a deep dive into the horror genre for its debut season. The Netflix series confirmed that it will have an episode that pays tribute to The Exorcist.

Things are about to get very dark in the town of Greendale. With less than two months before the first season drops, more details are emerging about Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Once believed to be a companion series to the CW’s Riverdale, Sabrina is now its own entity which will stream on Netflix this October.

Many viewers will be familiar with the character of Sabrina Spellman from Archie Comics or from the TGIF hit series,  Sabrina the Teenage Witch. The upcoming Netflix series will have a much darker tone as it is based on the comic book series by the same name. It will still focus on the teenage Sabrina (played by Kiernan Shipka) as she tries to balance life as a half-witch, half-mortal as her 16th birthday is approaching. Evil forces also arise which threaten her family and innocent mortals in the town of Greendale.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa serves as showrunner for both Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Even though they won’t be directly connected, it looks like he will be taking a cue from Riverdale‘s classic horror vibe. As Riverdale‘s second season was inspired by notable horror classics like The Town That Dreaded Sundown and Carrie, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is planning to do something similar. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Aguirre-Sacasa shared details on a special episode in the first season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina:

"“I love The Exorcist. It’s one of my favorite movies. We’re doing an homage to that; we’re doing an episode that’s like [The Exorcist].”"

Considering Sabrina is a witch, a lot of her storyline deals with the supernatural so it makes sense why they would pay tribute to a movie that deals with unexplained forces. The comic book series is a lot deadlier and bloodier than the version of Sabrina that most are familiar with. By incorporating demonic entities and possessions, they are opening a door well beyond the topic of witchcraft and magic.

It will be interesting to see who is the one to get possessed. As she starts to learn more about her dark magic, she tries to live a normal life as a teenager especially with her boyfriend, Harvey Kinkle. As the evil forces try to make her chose between being a witch or living life as a mortal, it makes sense if they would go after Harvey. So for now, he is our leading target for an Exorcist-like possession.

In the interview, Aguirre-Sacasa claims that every episode is like a “mini-movie.” Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was initially greenlit for two seasons, each composed of ten episodes so it looks like there is plenty of stories to tell. For now, we must hang on every detail until the first season premieres.
