Mayans MC starts off with a bang, but the brilliance of the first scene, and the Sons of Anarchy contrast can’t be ignored.

While Ezekiel ‘EZ’ Reyes (JD Pardo) and the rest of the Mayans MC gets introduced in a brutal and explosive fashion, the tone is set before the first person even shows their face on screen. Indeed, the wonderful juxtaposition between the Mayans MC and the Sons of Anarchy portends a more dangerous environment.

The comparisons between the two MCs is natural, and will likely help viewers assign roles to the new faces. As we learn more about the Mayans MC, however, the opening scene of “Perro/Oc” becomes more prophetic.

Flashback

For those who recall, the very first scene of Sons of Anarchy showed two crows picking apart some roadkill on a desert highway. Obscured by night, they seem almost carefree, oblivious to the approaching motorcycle. Almost daring the roaring front wheel to approach, it’s not until the lights shine from a foot or so away do they even flinch. Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) drives through the middle of the road, equally relaxed.

This is not true for the opening scene of Mayans MC.

The wall separates the differences.

On a desolate stretch of dirt road, ostensibly between Mexico and the U.S., a completely barren landscape makes the wall more formidable. A scroungy dog is dead center of the road. The dog’s hair looks like it’s half matted and half electrocuted. Coarse strands stick out like spiked armor. El perro sucio picks at a black crow (a clear representation of SAMCRO).

A motorcycle approaches in the distance and the dog is immediately aware. Hair would stand up if the hair on the dog’s back weren’t already standing. As the bike’s ape hangers become visible, the dog immediately starts to edge away. The dog knows it’s about to join the crow. One more pause and the dog defers, well before the motorcycle roars by, double-thumping over the carrion for good measure.

It’s EZ wearing his Prospect cut. Jaw clenched. Forearms tense, like coiled wire. His Prospect status disguises his lethality. His intensity is a far cry from the casual demeanor of Jax Teller, who, because of his absence of worry, almost danced in his motorcycle seat.

The wall divides. It separates the haves and the have-nots. Whereas SAMCRO has things a little easier, the situation for the Mayans MC is a little more dire. This is not a place for the weak or the spoiled. Sons of Anarchy even had one additional crow!

Written by Kurt Sutter and Elgin James, Mayans M.C. is an epic extension of SOA, and airs Tuesdays on FX.
