If you’re still looking for something else to watch to get through Hellatus, Shadowhunters is the show to turn to. Here are five reasons it makes the perfect Supernatural alternative.

Supernatural Hellatus doesn’t have long left. We’ll start watching new episodes in just over a month. If you’ve done your rewatch to get ready for the new season, you’ll want something else to watch. Hey, you may want something different while still rewatching on the odd night. Shadowhunters is definitely the show to turn to.

Based on the “Mortal Instrument” books, Shadowhunters is a Freeform series in the U.S. but internationally a Netflix one. It certainly needs support after being unfairly canceled, which is definitely something the SPN Family should get behind. Why? Well, the shows are extremely similar in nature and this is why Shadowhunters makes an excellent alternative.

Here are five reasons the SPN Family will want to start watching the alternative series. You’ll likely find yourself pulled into the ShadowFam.

5. The fandoms are just as passionate

More from Supernatural

Since I’ve mentioned the fandom names, let’s start with this as a reason to watch. Both fandoms are extremely passionate about their shows. They live to talk about the characters, the ships, the villains, and much more. If you look at the #Shadowhunters or #SaveShadowhunters hashtags on Twitter, you will see some very similar topics of conversations as when searching #Supernatural.

I can definitely imagine the SPN Family going to similar lengths to save the show if it’s canceled. The ShadowFan has raised money for various advertisements and campaigns to save the show. This is a group of people coming together for one show and it’s amazing, very much like the SPN Family.

Of course, there are going to be the odd bad eggs. The SPN Family has them too. However, for the most part, both fandoms are passionate, supportive, and awesome.

4. The show is demonic and magically based

One of the things that likely draws you to Supernatural is the focus on magic, demons, monsters, and legends. That’s something Shadowhunters offers and more. If you haven’t read the Mortal Instrument books, Shadowhunters is described as a supernatural American TV show.

It all starts with a girl turning 18 and finding out that demons, monsters, and other creatures are real. She also finds out that she has abilities of her own.

By the way, angels are also in the series, so it’s not all the bad. The Shadowhunters, which lead character Clary Fray learns she is, are human-angel hybrids tasked to hunt down demons.

3. You’ll recognize the demon names

Think you’ve seen the last of Lilith and Asmodeus? Disappointed in how Asmodeus turned out? Then you’ll definitely want to tune into Shadowhunters. There are a number of demon names that show up in both shows.

It’s the demon names that drew me in. I happened to read someone’s article because of the mention of Lilith. That led to me learning there was a character called Asmodeus and I decided to finally give the show a chance (I’d already come across it on Netflix but hadn’t really thought about watching).

2. It’s very much like Supernatural in style

This is a show that you could see being on The CW. There’s a darkness to it that The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural have had for years. Even Arrow has a similar darkness and I think it will be similar to the Charmed reboot in that aspect. Just based on that alone, I’d say Supernatural fans will be into the series.

But there’s more and not just because it’s a fantasy series. The whole character and storyline developments are similar in nature to our favorite show. While Clary is the main character (and an awesome female lead), we can’t overlook Jace, Isabelle, Alec, Magnus, Simon, and Luke. Even the villains have been developed well.

This is a show that wants you to keep watching. It wants to draw you in. Maybe if The CW had the show it would have received better treatment!

1. There’s awesome representation across the board

Whether you want people of color, different races, and nationalities, or even LGBTQ representation, you’ll get it with Shadowhunters. All those who have cried out for Destiel to happen will have the Malec ship–one of (if not the) best representations of a gay relationship on screen.

There are series regulars from all backgrounds and races, along with the lead character being a woman. All the characters get fair representation and storylines throughout, and Lilith is one of the best villains you will come across in millennial dramas.

If you haven’t tried out Shadowhunters yet, I encourage you as you find something else to get you through Hellatus.
