With the recent news of the CW producing a series based on the Nancy Drew books, the network’s track record points to success.

The CW has always been at the forefront of beloved teen shows. They had some older hits with One Tree Hill and Gilmore Girls. They’ve also had success recently with Riverdale and multiple shows featuring DC characters. Now, the CW is trying their hand at reviving an older franchise.

Recently, news broke about the CW developing a series based on Nancy Drew. A spinoff of the Hardy Boys book series, Nancy Drew was a series of books following Nancy Drew, a female detective. Drew would sometimes solve mysteries alone but sometimes with her friends: Bess and George.

A brief plot was posted on Deadline: “The untitled project is centered on 18-year-old Nancy Drew in the summer after her high school graduation. Nancy thought she’d be leaving her hometown for college, but when a family tragedy holds her back another year, she finds herself embroiled in a ghostly murder investigation — and along the way, she uncovers secrets that run deeper than she ever imagined.” It’s definitely a promising start as Nancy Drew hasn’t been given the best treatment on-screen.

More from CW

Both CBS and NBC tried to create Nancy Drew TV series but no avail. If those two networks couldn’t figure it out, the CW is the best place for it. Let’s get into some of the reason why the CW will do Nancy Drew justice. First, the CW has a great track record with teen shows. In the past, they’ve had several successful teen dramas at once. Right now, they’re riding the high of Riverdale. The CW has a knack for knowing what teen viewers like and for keeping them interested.

As evidenced by Riverdale, the CW does a great job of reinvigorating series. No one probably imagined the Archie Comics being successful in 2018. However, the CW tweaked it a bit and fans loved it. It might not be exactly like the comics but there are some callbacks to the original series.

With Nancy Drew, they wouldn’t be that far removed from the source material. Even though the series was published in 1930, mysteries don’t change much. They might have to tweak some things, but nothing major.

The main reason I’m excited about the CW handling Nancy Drew is their ability to make a darker teen drama. Once again, Riverdale is the perfect example. I’d love to see the CW’s take on the mysteries and some paranormal elements. Nancy Drew is such a beloved series and the CW has proven themselves time and time again.

Last, but certainly not least, is Nancy Drew gets an entirely new audience. Fans of the series growing up can share their love with their children or family. Drew is an iconic literary character and it’s time she gets her due. Hopefully, in the capable hands of the CW, Nancy Drew will get a worthwhile adaptation.
