Season 7: Sacrificing himself for Dean

Supernatural Season 7 is a hard season to watch. It’s one of my least favorites for a number of reasons (and I’m disappointed because I love Sera Gamble, who was showrunner this season). Anyway, one of the missing elements is Castiel.

After three seasons with the quirky, lovable angel, he’s gone for the majority of the seventh season. When he does return, he’s Emmanuel and then Crazy!Cass. It’s the latter that stands out the most.

In the finale, titled “Survival of the Fittest,” we had no idea what to really expect from Castiel. He’d spent most of the last few episodes telling the Winchesters he wasn’t going to fight. The torturous memories that caused Sam to hallucinate Lucifer made Castiel a pacifist.

So, when Castiel and Dean faced off against Dick Roman, we didn’t know if Castiel would ever actually help. How great was it to see the real Castiel shine through for a brief second? Just as Dick was about to attack Dean, Castiel jumped in the way and was the one to be thrust into a bunch of boxes. That also gave time for Dean to stab Dick and get rid of the Leviathan boss.

Castiel didn’t need to be his usual self to win us over. Supernatural Season 7 was about redeeming himself and in this moment and one a few episodes earlier (when he took the craziness from Sam) he managed it.
