1. Moana

Original Release Date: Nov. 23, 2016

Box Office Earnings: $56,631,401 (opening weekend), $248,757,044 (USA gross)
Critical Acclaim: Out of all the movies on the list, this is the one that did gain Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. Dwayne Johnson didn’t get anything specifically, but it was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year and Best Achievement in Music.

In total, it was nominated for 106 awards around the world and won 20 of them.

About the Role: Dwayne Johnson does the voice of Maui, the demi-God that has absolutely no interest in helping Moana restore the heart of the ocean. Well, at first he doesn’t. Eventually, he joins her on the quest and helps her restore the heart and settle the oceans again.

Sure, this role could have been played by anyone but Johnson shines through with his voice. I’d love to see the video of him recording the voice because you know he had all the facial expressions.

Simply the Best: Moana is just the latest Disney movie that steps away from the old-school view of women need to be saved all the time to the view that women can do the saving. This is also one of just six Disney “princess” movies that use a character of color in the lead role. Those two facts alone helped this movie stand out and draw attention.

However, a movie like that still needs to be well-written and that’s exactly what Moana was. The music is on point, the storyline is funny but respectful, and the use of the demi-God as an anti-hero of sorts was a nice touch. It’s one of Dwayne Johnson’s least predictable movies of all.
