9. Season 7, Episode 7, “That’s Me Trying”

Part of us knew it would happen, but we never really wanted to believe it. All the signs were there that Adele had Alzheimer’s.

As I’ve mentioned before, Adele’s is one of the best things about Grey’s Anatomy, which made losing her so difficult. But we didn’t lose her to death at first. We lost her to an awful disease that discriminates against nobody. It was also the disease that took Ellis Grey from Meredith, so Meredith knew what it was like.

In Grey’s Anatomy Season 7, Episode 7, Adele finally goes through tests to see if she is suffering from the disease. Sure enough, it’s all positive and we all struggle to cope. The most heartbreaking moment, though, is Adele.

As she learns that she has it, she turns to Webber with one of the most heartbreaking lines. “Don’t look at me like that. Like I’m damaged goods.”

We know he’s looking at her with sympathy and heartbreak, but that’s not the way she sees it. These two have been through so much that they needed and deserved more time to be happy. When she follows up with, “I’m still me. I’m still here,” it’s all the more heartbreaking.

There aren’t many episodes in Grey’s where it’s a non-death that makes us cry our eyes out. This is one of those episodes that will always stand out. It certainly deserves to be in the top 10 of this list. Some would argue even higher.
