William Riker played by Jonathan Frakes

Jonathan Frakes is now an accomplished director, and it’s almost a foregone conclusion that he will direct many episodes of the new series. And it’s unlikely that he will pass up an opportunity to be in the same frame as Stewart, when he`s so close.

When last seen, Riker was married to Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) and was in command of the U.S.S. Titan. Given the time jump, it would be safe to assume that he would be a higher-ranking officer in Starfleet by now.

Riker could easily cameo here and there as one of Picard’s friends and allies, helping with storylines as a supporting character, appearing on an as-needed basis.

Data played by Brent Spiner

Jean-Luc Picard had a lot of chemistry with many characters over the course of his tenure in the Star Trek universe. But probably none other than Data (Brent Spiner). While Picard never had children, teaching the android Data about the nuances of human emotions, life, dynamics and relationships was one of the most endearing and charming qualities of Picard.

Adding Data to the cast of the new series can further that dynamic and showcase how Picard has aged through the decades, more so emotionally than physically.

While Brent Spiner is very much active in the industry today, having just been signed to appear in Season 4 of Supergirl, I’m not sure how we could be included in the new Star Trek series. Data is an age-less android, whereas Spiner is not.
