Miles O’Brien played by Colm Meaney

While the entirety of the Star Trek universe has a diverse cast of different species with unique origins and personalities, the most human of them would be Colm Meaney’s Miles O’Brien.

Starting out as a background extra, O’Brien was transplanted from TNG and became a regular character within Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The character was always depicted as an everyman who happened to be in space, among aliens, in a future far too different from our real-world present.

O’Brien’s reactions and solutions to these sci-fi outwardly problems were always rooted in common sense and something that everyday audiences can relate to. He was a no-nonsense man, and in many ways, acted as the audience’s proxy to all the goings-on within the Star Trek universe.

This caused him to be at times, the butt of the joke, the most resilient character on-screen and endeared him to audiences and to the other characters on the shows he was featured in. He was also one of few characters in the Star Trek universe who was shown going from dating, to marrying and having a family with his wife, many elements of which played into his character throughout.

The inclusion of O’Brien’s straight-man character would ground the new series, with someone who has seen it all, and is an obviously fan favourite character.
