CW’s Supernatural released their first glimpse of the upcoming season with a promo that’s heavy in Archangel Michael and other irritating holy rollers.

It’s almost that time of year again, when Supernatural comes back and we’re ready to see the Winchester brothers separated for a total of two episodes before their problems are fixed and they can go back to business as usual. That’s usually how it goes right? When the cliffhanger is one of them becoming a demon, getting possessed by something, or going to Hell, and they’re usually back together in about one or two episodes. In that case, don’t worry, Michael won’t be violating Dean for long.

I’ve been in the Supernatural fandom for years now and it seems like they’ve waited longer than usual to release their first promo. Lucky fans got to see footage at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year, but the rest of us had to wait. The trailer slipped out last night under our noses and it shows Michael being the righteous pain everyone knows him to be.

The rest of the gang is brainstorming on ways to get Dean back, with Jack quick to pick the “kill the host, kill the essence” option. The trailer shows just enough to tease the season without giving anything away, but there is an interesting moment when Sam proclaims “there will be no new King of Hell” to an unseen person. Crowley and Asmodeus are both dead, meaning someone has to run Hell.

There was a time when Sam was supposed to be a type of Hell king, “The Boy King”, but I doubt they’ll go back to that after so many years. Most likely it involves Jack, or perhaps Michael wanting to rule Hell, he acts more demon than angel anyway.

The trailer also hints at more screentime for Sister Jo, the vessel of the angel Anael. Introduced in season 13 as Lucifer’s ally, she is an angel whose willing to do anything for survival, she’s cold-blooded and heartless, the perfect sidekick for Michael. Her larger role in the season will also let Jensen Ackles do with his wife what Jared Padalecki got to do with his, star alongside her and probably kill her.

In season 4, the demon Ruby was played by actress Genevieve Cortese, who ended up marrying Jared Padalecki two years later. Sister Jo is played by Danneel Harris, Ackles’s wife, so we’ll see how their on-screen relationship goes. Why are both their wives villains?

The synopsis for the season is as follows:

"Sam (Jared Padalecki) enlists everyone’s help in trying to track down Dean (Jensen Ackles), who can literally be anywhere. Meanwhile, Castiel (Misha Collins) may be in over his head after meeting up with an unreliable source. After being drained of his grace in season 13, Jack (Alexander Calvert) is adjusting to life as a human, learning new skills and figuring out how he fits in to this world of hunters."

In season 14, the show will reach its 300th episode, which showrunner Andrew Dabb said will be a love letter to the show and to the Winchesters. As Dabb explained at SDCC, the episode will be about Sam and Dean told through the eyes of outsiders set in the town where they live, about the two mysterious guys who go to the laundromat wearing bloody clothes and only drive around together in a ’67 Impala.

Without Dean, Sam is going to have to lead the way for a while. Taking charge of the group of hunters they brought from the parallel universe while playing dad to baby Devil Jack, who appears to be more cross now that his grace is gone, his father proved to be literally the Devil and one of his three surrogate fathers are gone. The team is beaten down and struggling to find their footing, but they always find a way.

Just a side-note comment, why does Cass get beat to Hell every season? He’s lost and regained his grace so many times and is an angel, yet he can’t even walk across the street without someone trying to kill him. The man just walks on-screen and boom! A bloody nose.
