Acting since his teens, Michael Pitt may not be recognized by mainstream audiences but his filmography is still a colorful one, completed with movies of all kinds. This list names the top ten.

Whenever I ask people if they’ve heard of Michael Pitt, most of them say “is that Brad Pitt’s brother?” And the answer is no, he shares no relation to Brad Pitt. Just making that clear before I start.

With an unusual face, the same haircut since the 90’s, and a list of low-budget indie movies on his resume, Michael Pitt has succeeded in keeping himself out of the spotlight. A man with a seemingly anti-social personality who dislikes blockbusters, it’s no surprise that he hasn’t climbed up towards the A-listers club with his not-so brother Brad, though he certainly has the talent to do so.

More from Movies

A former “bad boy”, Pitt lived in New Jersey until leaving home at 16, after he got kicked out of three different high schools and ran off to New York. After living on the streets, he worked his way up to an Off-Broadway debut in “The Trestle at Pope Lick Creek” in 1999 at the New York Theatre Workshop. He caught the eye of a casting agent, whom he mistook for a police officer and ran away from. When he eventually caught him, the agent offered him a reoccurring role on the series Dawson’s Creek.

Gifted for portraying gritty characters with disturbed minds-a troubled bootlegger in an incestuous relationship with his mother (eww), multiple sadistic psychopaths, a petty criminal, and a murderous teen- it’s clear Pitt doesn’t like conventional and if you don’t believe it, then just listen to his band, Pagoda. If you hate repetitive plots than seek Pitt out because he seems to go out of his way to pick the strangest movies available to him.

Because this list is strictly movies, I’m not including his television roles from NBC’s Hannibal or HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. Both shows and roles deserve high praise, but they don’t qualify here. Though I must say that his version of Mason Verger could send chills up your spine.
