Happy Death Day 2U getting a Valentines Day release date

Happy Death Day is getting a more rom-com type of sequel set to be released on Valentines Day of next year.

In the tradition of surprise hit horror movies, Blumhouses Happy Death Day is getting a sequel that will be just as quirky, if not more so, than the original. The original film was structured like Groundhog Day in which the lead character wakes up to relive a single day over and over again. Tree Gelbman, played by Jessica Rothe, is murdered on her birthday but every time she dies, she wakes up to start the day over again and must stop her murder if she wants to live to see the next one.

With each murder, Tree becomes more confident and self-accepting, not caring what anyone thinks of her because she’s been literally murdered more than once. She’s probably thinking “what’s the worst that could happen if I walk around campus naked”, and she does end up walking around her college campus naked at one point, followed by belching and farting in public, spanking boys when they’re bad, and stuffing her face with french fries. She’s a true hero.

The sequel, simply titled Happy Death Day 2U, will see the main three original cast members return, including Rothe, Israel Broussard as her boyfriend Carter Davis, and Ruby Modine as Lori Spengler with Suraj Sharma and Sarah Yarkin joining the cast as two new characters. Sharma is playing Samar Ghosh, a science enthusiast and geek who enjoys coding in his spare time, and Yarkin will play Dre Morgan, a science geek and tom-boy who is Samar’s partner-in-crime.

More from Movies

Horror movies have always been the genre to tire out their stories with movie after movie because their low budgets make sequels possible. Even a crappy horror movie can squeeze a number two or three out because whatever they make at the box office, no matter how small, is usually more than their budget.

Happy Death Day made $122 million off a budget of $5 million, and it was one of the more decent horror films made in the last 10 years. I’m going to take a wild guess and say that we might see a Happy Death Day 3 or 4 in our future, featuring more titles playing on the “Happy Birthday Song.”

Actress Jessica Rothe said that the sequel will start up directly where the first one left off and will be like Back to the Future. The only thing I can imagine is that Tree has to relive her birthday (AGAIN!) to stop something else from happening she couldn’t stop before. Leaked plot details state that Tree will discover that “dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead”.

Rothe detailed sequel plans earlier this year to Collider:

"“The sequel, the way he described it to me, elevates the movie from being a horror movie – and I wouldn’t even say it’s just a horror movie because it’s a horror, comedy, rom-com drama – into a Back to the Future type of genre film where the sequel joins us right from where we left off, it explains a lot of things in the first one that didn’t get explained, and it elevates everything,”"
