Marvel movie easter egg alert from The Gifted season 2 premiere!
By Ryan Mekkes
The Gifted Season 2, episode 1 did not disappoint. But to add to the hype, there may have been a huge Marvel movie Easter egg as well.
The Gifted Season 2 premiere gave us a potentially major Marvel Easter egg and it didn’t waste any time getting there either. At the beginning of the episode, in a scene where Grace Byers’ character, Reeva Payge, is speaking with a panel of mutants called The Inner Circle, she attempts to explain actions she took in Atlanta when she appeared to go out of her way to mention the “new mutants” that inhabit the earth.
Here are her words:
“What do we all want? It’s simple; we want peace. We want freedom. We want to feel safe in our homes. Let’s be honest, none of that happens unless mutants have a place of their own. In Atlanta, we found new mutants strong enough to make that dream come true. And did we break a few rules? Maybe. But we did it for the sake of a dream we all share.”
Those of us who follow Marvel are aware that The New Mutants is a movie in the X-Men universe set to come out in the summer of 2019. And though one could easily argue that a line like “new mutants” could have been written into the script of The Gifted with no significance outside of the show itself, if you listen close enough, it is clear that Grace Byers really emphasized those two words, “New Mutants,” seemingly to make them stand out.
And there’s more to the theory than that.
Showrunner for The Gifted, Matt Nix, made it clear in an interview with comicbook.com that he wants the show to work off of the movies to some extent.

And when you combine that with the fact that the show is synced up with the timeline of the movies — since the X-Men have been obscure since before Wolverine’s death in Logan (as they are in The Gifted) — it should make one wonder if Nix’s insertion of the term “New Mutants” in the opening moments of season 2 was a coincidence, or if it was intentional.
Either way could be the case, but let’s be honest… Nix is too smart for that to have gone over his head.
I’m calling it intentional.
It was likely at least a teaser — a tie-in of sorts. But after the Disney/Fox merger, it’s fair to speculate that we could be seeing a lot more creativity in the future as far as how the movies and The Gifted work together.
