What can we expect from “A Philadelphia Story,” the second episode of This is Us Season 3?

This is Us is officially back; the show’s third season premiered last week and it was a doozy. “Nine Bucks” left fans with many questions, with the most notable one being who was the mystery man that Rebecca kissed at the end of the episode?

We don’t know the answer to that mystery but we do have some clues about the second episode of the season, “a Philadelphia Story.” The promo for the episode provides us with a few hints (and some of the same questions.)

1. What’s going on with Toby?

Since the season two finale, we’ve known that Toby is heading down a dark path. A flash forward scene set a few months after Toby’s marriage to Kate shows that man is not in a good place. He’s lying in bed and Kate is telling him the doctor wants to increase his medication.

Plenty of moments in “Nine Bucks” foreshadowed this eventuality. Toby offers to cut down on his intake of antidepressants in order to increase the couple’s chances of having a baby. Throughout the episode, Toby is less than thrilled when Kate gets approval for In Vitro Fertilization, or IVF.

In this trailer, we don’t see much of Toby but his screen time is ominous; he yells “shut up” at Kate and Rebecca. We also see him looking disheartened at a phone screen that displays the search results for antidepressant withdrawal. It seems evident that Toby is on the precipice of a downward spiral.

2. “I’m doing the very best that I can.”

The trailer also shows a moment of tension between teenage Randall and Rebecca. The former points out Kate’s problematic eating and Kevin’s budding additive tendencies. Rebecca just says she’s doing the best she can. The show hasn’t explored a lot of the Pearsons’ lives in the months after Jack’s death. Could we finally be seeing the family’s troubles to cope in the immediate aftermath of the tragic event?

3. “Come on, Bec, what’s the harm in looking?”

There’s also a brief suggestion that the episode, and the season, will explore Rebecca’s relationships away from Jack. The trailer hints that we’ll see Rebecca’s attempts to find love again after losing her husband but many fans want to know the identity of the man who’s trying to steal Jack’s girl.

We’ll have to wait until Tuesday at 9:00 pm EST to see how these mysteries continue to unfold.
