God Friended Me is CBS’ show to take on NBC’s This Is Us. After ABC got off to a good start with A Million Little Things, the CBS series is going to add a little more comedy to the feel-good, family-focused drama. Here’s how you can watch the God Friended Me series premiere live tonight.

For those who haven’t heard about it yet (and you mustn’t have been watching CBS much because the trailer has been everywhere!), the series is about Miles, an atheist who is ready to argue with anyone about the existence (or lack of as he believes) of God. One day he receives a social media friend request from “God” and it takes him on a journey of self-discovery.

Where does family come in? Miles’ father is a reverend. Due to their conflicting beliefs, they’ve not spoken to each other for some time, but Miles’ sister plays the go-between.

On top of that, after accepting “God’s” friend request, Miles is sent a number of friend suggestions and one of those is connected to his mother. It turns out his mother died and it’s her death that is connected to his lack of belief in God–or even a higher power.

"Miles Finer is an outspoken atheist whose life is turned upside down when he receives a friend request on social media from God and unwittingly becomes an agent of change in the lives and destinies of others around him. After repeated pokes by God, Miles’ curiosity takes over, and he accepts the ultimate friend request and follows the signs to Cara Bloom, an online journalist. Brought together by the mysterious account, the two find themselves investigating God’s friend suggestions and inadvertently helping others in need. Miles is set on getting to the bottom of what he believes is an elaborate hoax, but in the meantime, he’ll play along and — in the process — change his life forever."

The pilot episode is actually already available to watch online. You don’t need to catch it live when it airs at 8:30 p.m. tonight. You can watch it through YouTube, Facebook, and even CBS All Access and CBS.com. Some of the options are only available in the United States, whereas others are available internationally.

I’ve watched it and it is worth a try. It’s certainly not going to be for everyone, but it doesn’t force religion on you as you would expect from the title. The pilot gives me the feeling of just opening beliefs into the idea that everything happens for a reason and we are guided by some higher power or fate.
