James Gunn to write Suicide Squad 2, reactions hit the Twitterverse

James Gunn chosen by Warner Bros. to scribe Suicide Squad 2 and possibly direct.
Suicide Squad 2 has a confirmed a writer for their movie, according to Deadline Hollywood. Guardians of the Galaxy’s writer and director James Gunn is now being put to the task to scribe the flick. There’s even a possibility he’ll helm it, too. Gavin O’Connor was suppose to write and possibly direct, but that’s no longer the case.
Although Gunn was fired from Disney due to his past offensive tweets from many years ago, it was clear that other studio executives were chomping at the bit to hire him on.
Hollywood Reporter tweeted that this won’t be a sequel, but “a brand new take” on it.
"Studio sources say that James Gunn is not developing a #SuicideSquad “sequel” but a brand new take on the DC property."
Considering Gunn’s previous GOTG flicks were a hit, it’ll hopefully be an improvement over the David Ayer directed Suicide Squad movie. The flick only got a 28% Tomatometer rating with just above an average audience score of 60% over at Rotten Tomatoes.
The Suicide Squad 2 news has had quite the reaction out on Twitter. Comic Book’s Brandon Davis is even gunning to have Dave Bautista partner up with Gunn in the flick. I don’t know readers, do you think he’d make a good King Shark? Do you think Dave will have a good way to channel his anger away from Disney’s actions toward Gunn into playing an intense and violent character resulting in an outstanding performance?
Another response made by Variety film reporter Justin Kroll emphasized the initial pick for Suicide Squad 2’s writer, Gavin. Kroll said that the story Gavin had on board for the movie was almost identical to that of the Birds of Prey project. Justin said that “O’Connor grew frustrated and fell off project to do HAS BEEN instead”. This makes sense as you can’t really have almost duplicate stories regardless of different characters.
Suicide Squad 2’s new writer does have a strike against him in the court of public opinion, most likely. Considering that the DCEU has gotten more family friendly, could Gunn cross the line in a grittier flick? With his Twitter history, hopefully he’ll be much more cautious and not fall back into bad habits, right? Is there also a question on whether Gunn’s firing was a mistake?
