Modern Family recap: Would it be Arvin or Dylan to win Haley’s heart?

In the latest episode of Modern Family, Haley has to choose between Arvin and Dylan. Meanwhile, Manny’s girlfriend moves in and Mitch blows another big job opportunity.

At the start of the season, it became clear that Haley’s love life would be a major story this season and we took a huge step forward there in last night’s episode. Haley made her decision and we got a few really great moments out of it. Let’s dive right in.

Haley’s heart

The episode begins with Dylan revealing to Phil that he and Haley saw each other again and that he’s still in love with her. She’s ghosted him since that meeting and he needs Phil’s help to get in touch with her. Phil agrees to tell Haley and when he does, she agrees to have Dylan come over to end it in person.

Of course that couldn’t go smoothly. As Dylan is set to arrive at the house, Claire arrives with Arvin. He flew in to surprise her and in the background we see Dylan in a heart costume. Phil intercepts Dylan to try to avoid a disaster. Inside, Arvin admits to having kissed another woman and is immediately forgiven. Haley, of course, slept with Dylan so her transgression is a bit worse.

When Claire realizes Dylan is hiding in the house she’s upset. She wants Arvin for Haley (for security purposes) and Phil wants Dylan (for emotional purposes). When Arvin sees Dylan the two get into a pretty weak scuffle before Haley breaks it up and leaves the room to ask her parent’s advice.

She asks them each what they love about each other and both list emotional reasons. The reasons they give sound almost exactly like Dylan and Haley’s relationship. They then ask her to picture her future with both and she does. Arvin is the big house and perfect family, while Dylan is the modest lifestyle with a lot of great, love-filled moments. She chooses Dylan.

Sherry

Manny’s girlfriend Sherry is in town and, though she’s perfect for Manny, she’s incredibly annoying to Gloria and Jay. When Manny heads back to college, Jay expects her to be leaving also but she seems to be sticking around. When confronted, Gloria says that she agreed to let her stay and work on her improv since Manny’s dorm won’t let he move in with him.

When Gloria doesn’t get mad at Sherry’s impression of her, Jay gets suspicious. He realizes that Gloria wants him to be the one to kick her out and decides to pretend he likes her. Gloria sees this and tells him she can fake it longer than he can before Sherry walks in and does another impression of her. Gloria basically tells her she hates her as she throws her out of the house. Terribly timed because 5 seconds later Manny walks in and says that the school has decided to let her move in with him.

Mitch can’t get a win

During this episode Mitch went over the house of a co-worker. They take the kids and just as Mitch is about to be assigned a big case, their nephew breaks something. They go out and find that it’s a priceless item with sentimental value. To level the scales, Mitch tells Cam to bite his leg so he can pretend it was the co-worker’s dog. Of course, they walk in and see Cam’s mouth on Mitch’s leg.

Needless to say he won’t be getting that case.

Modern Family has been great thus far this season and as time passes it’s looking more and more like it will be the last.

Modern Family returns next Wednesday at 9/8 Central.
