If you’ve seen Mark Pellegrino in anything other that Supernatural, the acting in Episode 2 wouldn’t have surprised you. Those who haven’t seen him in anything else saw just how talented he is. Mr. Pellegrino, you slayed it last night!

Supernatural Season 14, Episode 2 gave us a heartbreaking moment for Nick, played by Mark Pellegrino. Any parent watching it would know just who he was feeling. Those who aren’t parents still got a sense of the sadness, the guilt, and the anger brewing inside.

Those who have seen Pellegrino in anything else wouldn’t have been surprised at his acting skills last night. For a long time on Supernatural though, we’ve only got him playing Lucifer. While the character is loved (and sometimes hated in a good way), the acting range has been nothing like what we got last night.

Before I move onto my reasons why Pellegrino killed it last night in “Gods and Monsters,” I’ll state that there are spoilers from this point. If you haven’t seen the episode yet, I urge you to see it first.

The fear of all parents

We got more focus on Nick in Supernatural Season 14, Episode 2. Yes, Lucifer’s vessel is still alive. Right now, I’m not going to question how and why. That’s not on my mind, because this is all about Pellegrino’s acting.

Before becoming Lucifer, Nick was a mourning father and husband. His wife and child had been murdered and Nick found himself in despair. That was the weak point in his life that gave Lucifer an in.

More from Supernatural

In “Gods and Monsters,” Castiel reminded Nick of his family. Suddenly, everything came flooding back and Nick went through the grief and sadness again. The Gifted touched on this last season when Jace had to live through his daughter’s death again and in Supernatural, the same feelings rose in me. It would be a nightmare for any parent to have to relive through the death of a child, but Nick had to relive the deaths of his child and wife.

We didn’t need a lot in terms of dialogue to get a sense of everything Nick was feeling in this one scene. Everything was shown through facial expressions. You could see as Nick was remembering everything, the realization set in his face slowly. Once he remembered it all, the emotion was raw and heartbreaking.

Is it Nick or Lucifer?

I know there are a lot of questions about whether Lucifer is still somewhere in there. As an angel, Castiel would be able to sense that. However, while Lucifer is gone, he’s not completely gone. After years of being possessed by the archangel, Nick’s psyche has been heavily affected by him.

Once again, Pellegrino slays it during Supernatural Season 14, Episode 2. There’s a moment when, as Nick, he’s angry and upset. Then suddenly, he changes. With a click of his fingers, Pellegrino goes immediately from Nick to Lucifer. The whole demeanor changes, even though Lucifer isn’t actually in there anymore.

There are other moments like that throughout the episode. He’s trying to hold onto who Nick was, but Lucifer’s personality comes through. Sometimes there were just small reminders of how Lucifer would sit or look. In the end, the whole demeanor shifts back into the archangel and we’re left with the wonder of whether Nick was the one who killed his wife and child or not.

Mark Pellegrino is an actor you need to watch in more than just Supernatural. He’s not had the chance to show his full acting range as Lucifer but he got that chance as Nick. This is a man who can make you feel everything in five seconds with absolutely no dialogue and it makes me excited to see what’s more with Nick in Season 14.
