Station 19 Season 2 gets full season order: Why didn’t it already have one?
Station 19 Season 2 has officially been given a full season order by ABC. Considering this is the second season, shouldn’t it have had one already?
There are plenty of freshman shows getting full season orders recently. Manifest got three extra episodes order yesterday and Single Parents became the first comedy of the season to get the full 22-episode treatment. Now it’s time for Station 19 to get a full season order.
Wait, Station 19? But that’s a sophomore show. Shouldn’t that already have a full season order?
The Grey’s Anatomy spin-off was only given a 13 second season. This will have likely happened for two reasons. The first is that it was a midseason show that got a fall slot for its second season. Already, the network was banking on it being a strong option for the ratings but there was clearly the worry that it was always meant to be a midseason show.

The second reason was because of the ratings last season. And this does connect to the fact that it was a midseason show. The ratings weren’t stellar for a fall show. The first season came in with an average of 5.266 million in total and 1.05 in the demographic. Not awful but still a little questionable.
ABC has seen an improvement so far. While the premiere opened a little down compared to the Station 19 pilot (completely normal), the second episode saw an increase. This was likely linked to the Grey’s Anatomy two-hour crossover event but it still saw an uptick. And it’s that uptick that has impressed ABC.
Ratings have been down again this week, though. These are only preliminary ratings but Station 19 Season 2, Episode 3 scored a 0.80 in the demo and 4.137 million in total, making it a series low. Honestly, the episode wasn’t that great, so it’s not that surprising. It did still perform better than I Feel Bad and then How to Get Away with Murder and S.W.A.T. in the next hour.
ABC still clearly believes in the show because it’s after the ratings were out that the network decided to order the back nine. That will take Station 19 up to 22 episodes, which is two less than Grey’s Anatomy, but still good for an okay-rated show.
