Doctor Who: Could Karen Gillan really return to the series?

Rumors have been circulating about Karen Gillan returning to Doctor Who. Could it really happen or is it nothing more than a fantasy?

It’s safe to say that Karen Gillan’s time in Doctor Who during Matt Smith’s era as companion Amy Pond went down well among Whovians. Many were sad to see her come out of the series, and just as many, maybe even more, would love nothing more than to see her return.

So much so, that as soon as we get even the slightest whiff of her potentially returning to the series, fans go a little bit bonkers. And such a thing recently happened when Karen Gillan shared an Instagram post with all of her followers.

The image was taken in New York, has a very obvious blue telephone box in the background, and was accompanied with the caption, “He’s *she’s come for me in New York!!!”

This immediately kicked off a furious reaction of fans speculating that Amy Pond could be about to return to Doctor Who. Some publications even picked up the news of how this could be a hint that the 13th Doctor could be swooping in and saving her from her nightmare.

But as much as we would like it to happen, could it really? Is it possible for Karen Gillan/Amy Pond to return to Doctor Who?

Well, it’s really going to depend on how religious you stick to Doctor Who canon. Technically she can’t, it was explained when Rory was taken just before Amy was in that extremely depressing episode. The two died in the past but lived their lives together. However, it’s Doctor Who and we have a thing called Timey Whimey stuff.

This is the best thing about Doctor Who, it, unlike other TV shows, can easily rewrite their own rules to fit their own narrative. They just need to come up with a long-super-complicated-but-sounds-fairly-plausible explanation, throw in a couple of Timey Whimyes, and we are sold.

The only thing it will really depend on is if Karen Gillan herself wants to come back. Which is good news for fans who do want her back, because she has made it known that she would happily return if she could.

So yes, Karen Gillan could return to Doctor Who. All someone needs to do in the Doctor Who camp is ask.
