Dean and Sam fight the fictional Hatchet Man on Halloween, and Dean couldn’t be happier about it on the latest episode of Supernatural.

Even though the stakes are constantly high on Supernatural, every once in a while it’s good to get back to the roots of the series – Saving people, hunting things.

In Supernatural’s Halloween episode, a figure of a fictional serial killer prowled the streets with its hatchet set on destroying one man. It turned out the life-size figure was possessed by a ghost looking to kill a former employee of the comic shop he owned when he was alive.

The episode, “Mint Condition” was filled with funny quips, cute stories, and smiles even in the face of danger. Dean got to show off his love for campy, horror movies, as it seemed the brothers were stuck in one of their own.

More from Supernatural

Dean fought with Hatchet Man in a hospital that was eerily empty, mimicking scenes from one of his favorite horror movies featuring the psycho.

Of course, he prevailed, but not without a little help from Sam, which made him want to pair up for a costume theme next year. Bert and Ernie (weird). Ren and Stimpy. Rocky and Bullwinkle!

And then Dean landed on Thelma and Louise, which earned a look of despair from Sam. Just the idea that they might dress up next season in costume for Halloween already makes me look forward to Season 15 (fingers crossed we get one!).

It was a much-needed episode, a respite from all the horrible things that have happened since last season, and with Michael still hanging over their heads. Sam managed to find this case after the comic shop employee Stu claimed he was beaten up by Panthro from ThunderCats on a faux-Reddit forum.

Even though Dean has been spending his time locked in his room since the bunker is filled with hunters he doesn’t know, this case was enough to get him out of his funk. Also, taking on a baddie head-on was exactly what he needed.

As Dean said, he needed a win.

The brothers are the best when they’re together, even if Supernatural is about more than just the two of them. But Season 14, Episode 4, titled “Mint Condition,” was a great throwback reminder as to why there are legions of Supernatural fans in the world.

Also, I’m all for Thelma and Louise.
