Psych: The Movie Sequel: What we know now
Psych-Os around the world have been wondering what is going on with the promised Psych: The Movie Sequel. What do we know now?
Last year’s Psych: The Movie reunited the gang in San Francisco, where Jules (Maggie Lawson) is now the lead detective, working for Chief Karen Vick (Kirsten Nelson). Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dulé Hill) have started a new shop called Psychphrancisco modeled after Gremlins. Juliet’s partner Sam (Sam Huntington) is shot and the gang has to work fast to find the culprit and save the chief’s daughter. Corbin Bernsen returned to play Shawn’s dad, former cop Henry Spencer.
The movie ended on a dramatic cliffhanger when Juliet’s former black-ops brother Ewan (John Cena) showed up at Psychphrancisco with authorities chasing him down. Ewan, along with Gust and newlywed Shawn were seen escaping, and knowing that they would miss the plane to Shawn and Juliet’s honeymoon.
Psycho-Os need to see Psych: The Movie Sequel to see what happens next! When is this movie coming out?

When Psych: The Movie was released a year ago, show creator Steve Franks revealed to TVGuide that he had plans for five additional Psych movies. He admitted by the eighth season of the USA Network show he was “steering it towards the two-hour world.” Not unlike Shawn Spencer, the Peter Pan-like fake psychic that Franks created, he believes that anything is possible if you just believe.
"“I steered it right towards doing one [movie], and I realized by saying something over and over maybe I could talk it into existence. So I thought if I can talk into existence one, maybe I can talk into existence six.”"
More recently, James Roday confirmed that the script for Psych: The Movie Sequel has indeed been written and ready to go. Roday joked on Table Talk with Michael Ausiello that it will be a “thinly veiled two-hour episode of Suits.” He assured TVLine that the story is ready. They just need to get the various schedules synced.
Crazy conflicting schedules
What kind of crazy schedule syncing is Roday talking about? Currently, three of the main Psych stars are acting on other shows. Dulé Hill has been upgraded to a regular on Suits now that Meghan Markle has become a princess and Patrick J. Adams and left the show. Yet, there is no confirmation on whether there will be a season 9.
Right now, Hill may or may not need to be included in some scheduling magic. Then again, Suits is on USA Network and they are sure to be flexible for a new Psych movie.
Maggie Lawson has recently joined the cast of Lethal Weapon for season 3. She is playing Dr. Natalie Flynn, Wesley Cole’s (Seann William Scott) ex-girlfriend and mother of his child. Fans seem to be embracing Scott since the departure of Clyane Crawford at the end of season 2. But it looks like Lawson won’t have too many upcoming scheduling conflicts.
This third season was going to be shorter with only 13 episodes, clearing demonstrating that Fox was unsure how Lethal Weapon fans would take the cast changes. Then early in October, Damon Wayans announced he is quitting the show at the end of the season. Filming was originally expected to end in December, but Fox added two more episodes that very possibly could end the series. Odds are Lawson will have some free time to squeeze in a Psych movie.
It looks like the real schedule to get around is James Roday’s. He is currently starring in ABC’s new feel-good drama, A Million Little Things. Just recently, the show was upgraded to a full-season. This good news means he will continue to be filming into early 2019.
Perhaps the biggest scheduling conflict could be with John Cena, who promises to be highly featured in the sequel movie. The WWE star is a busy man with multiple careers. Can he squeeze in time to film Psych: The Movie Sequel? It looks like if he and Roday can sync their schedules, the rest will fall into place.
Will Lassiter return?
Timothy Omundson suffered from a mild stroke a few months before Psych: The Movie went into production. The script had to be majorly reworked in order to take Chief Carlton Lassiter out, as the Galavant actor was unable to join the production. They filmed Omundson’s emotional cameo after production was completed. As wonderful as the movie was, it was clear it was missing Lassiter’s dark humor.
James Roday has recently promised a lot of Carlton Lassiter will be included the new sequel. He told Collider that “we all feel like we owe the Psych-Os a larger dose of Lassiter, so that’s gonna happen.” We are going to hold him to that promise!
Will Emelio Estevez finally guest star?
Fans of Psych relish the many 80s show references including the guest appearances of four out of five stars of The Breakfast Club. Ally Sheedy appeared in several episodes as Mr. Yang, Judd Nelson guest starred as Dr. Steven Reidman, Riverdale’s Molly Ringwald portrayed Nurse McElroy and Anthony Michael Hall portrayed Detective Harris Trout.
The only holdout from the iconic 80s movie has been Emelio Estevez. But he has not been forgotten. Over the years, Shawn has mentioned Emelio several times, including calling himself Emelio Estevez during the football episode. Estevez, Charlie Sheen’s oldest brother and Martin Sheen’s oldest son, has spent more time behind the camera than in front of it, with The Public his latest release.
James Roday has often quipped that if you mention a celebrity often enough, as he did Val Kilmer, they will show up. Will Emlio make at least a cameo in the movie sequel? Let’s hope so!
Psycho-Os currently have several options on how they can bide their time until Psych: The Movie Sequel is released. Rewatching Psych is certainly worthwhile, as each episode is chock filled with running jokes and Easter eggs that are more meaningful when seen the second time around. Currently, Amazon Prime is airing all eight seasons of Psych, including Psych: The Musical and a series ending interview with the entire cast.
Psych-Os can currently watch James Roday on A Million Little Things on Wednesdays at 10/9C on ABC, Maggie Lawson on Lethal Weapon on Tuesdays at 8/7c on FOX, and Dulé Hill in Suits on USA Network and Amazon Prime.
