Disney Channel has released a press release for one of its shows, Andi Mack, and it will air something you all won’t believe, a gun safety arc storyline.

I can’t believe what I’ve read on Twitter today. Disney Channel will be airing a gun safety arc storyline of two upcoming episodes of Andi Mack. For a network that has always shied away from deep storylines, this is jaw-dropping. This is new territory for them.

When I watched the sneak peek video of the cast of Andi Mack discussing the gun safety arc storyline, it didn’t sound so bad. However, when I watched the preview, it actually shocked me. I’m always up for Disney Channel to air mature topics. I’ve always wanted that, especially with Girl Meets World, but a gun safety storyline?

I feel that it’s not for Disney’s demographics. A gun and a kids network don’t go together, which is why I’m uncomfortable with it. However, I can’t make any judgments, as I haven’t even watched the episodes yet. I’m sure Disney will be very careful with this, especially as this storyline is very serious.

Andi Mack introduced a gay main character in season 2 and have used vulgar language before. There has been an episode covering panic attacks and even the topic of unplanned pregnancies.

Andi Mack is clearly helping change Disney Channel. However, I would have to give major props to Girl Meets World which paved the way for Andi Mack to do this. Girl Meets World was the first Disney Channel show to air mature storylines. A storyline about God, father abandonment for Maya, Asperger syndrome, and more.

My question is: Why didn’t Disney Channel let Girl Meets World grow more? The show could have done just about the same as Andi Mack, but for some reason, Disney shied away.

Now, Disney is welcoming it. I suppose Disney received positive reactions from Girl Meets World’s mature storylines and now they’re moving forward with more daring topics.

Anyhow, here’s the synopsis of the Andi Mack gun safety story-arc episodes, per Deadline:

"The storyline illustrates peer pressure and a true test of character for Cyrus (Joshua Rush) when T.J. (Luke Mullen) and his group of friends unexpectedly invite Cyrus to join their unsupervised target practice. The first episode in the gun safety arc was written by Phil Baker and directed by Paul Hoen, and the second episode was penned by Elena Song and Suzanne Weber and directed by the series executive producer Michelle Manning.Disney Channel programmers developed the episodes under the consultancy of the child development experts at The Brady Center and Hollywood, Health & Society (HH&S), a program of the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center. The episodes include a public service announcement about gun safety."

What do you guys think about this? Is it too much for a kids network to air a gun safety storyline?

The first part of Andi Mack‘s gun safety story-arc episode airs on Friday, November 16, followed by the second part on Friday, November 30, at 8/7 PST on the Disney Channel.
