The nominations to the 2019 Golden Globes have been announced. Despite the strong field, there are some glaring omissions. Here are the five biggest snubs from this year.

Awards season is underway after the announcement of the 2019 Golden Globes nominations. Leslie Mann, Danai Gurira, Terry Crews, and Christian Slater revealed the nominees this morning live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

Upon glancing at the nominations, Vice and A Star Is Born were the big winners for films and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story along with The Americans scored big in television. However, there were many notable actors, shows, and films that were completely left out from each category.

Here are the five biggest snubs.

No Ethan Hawke or Ryan Gosling in Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama

Looking at the category beforehand, Bradley Cooper, John David Washington, and Rami Malek all seemed like sure things to receive nominations, which they did. However, many believed (including myself) that Ethan Hawke and Ryan Gosling would round out the category. However, both Hawke and Gosling were left out in favor of Lucas Hedges in Boy Erased and Willem Dafoe in At Eternity’s Gate. Both Hawke and Gosling received critical praise for their performances in First Reformed and First Man respectively.

Cold War left out of Best Foreign Language Film

The foreign film category was set to be a strong field lead by Roma and Shoplifters. However, one film in particular was left off the list, which happened to be one of the most critically acclaimed movies of the year. The film is Cold War.

The Polish film tells the story of how a musical director and a young singer fall in love during an impossible time in the Cold War in the 1950s. Cold War had won Best Foreign Language Film at both the National Board of Review and New York Film Critics Circle before being snubbed by the Globes. The decision to leave Cold War out of the category will upset a lot of people so I would be shocked if Cold War does not receive an Oscar nomination.

Widows is completely ignored

In his previous film, director Steve McQueen received the top prize at the Golden Globes in 2014, which was Best Motion Picture – Drama for12 Years a Slave. In his first feature film follow up, McQueen’s Widows was completely shut out from the ceremony, receiving zero nominations. Widows being shut out of the top film category is not entirely surprising, but leaving out Viola Davis in the best actress category is stunning.

Atlanta shut out from Best Television Series – Comedy

It’s no secret that one of the most innovative and creative shows on television is Atlanta. The series has been met with universal acclaim for both seasons. In fact, at last year’s ceremony, Atlanta won for Best Television Series – Comedy and Donald Glover won for Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy. It’s amazing how much can change in a year. Despite Glover receiving a nomination once again, the series was shut out from the comedy series category.

Jodie Comer snubbed for Killing Eve

One of the biggest surprises in television this year was Killing Eve. The series follows Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh), a British Intelligence Officer who begins to track down the psychopathic, but talented assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer). Both women eventually become obsessed with each other as the cat-and-mouse game ensues. Met with high praise from critics, Killing Eve received nominations in both Best Television Series – Drama and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama (Oh). However, Comer was shut out from the acting categories entirely despite her impressive performance as Villanelle.
