Avengers Endgame trailer: What we didn’t see and why
By Paul Zuniga
The first trailer for Avengers: Endgame gave us exactly what we hoped for with a perfect tease but left a lot of areas untouched. Here’s what wasn’t in the trailer and why.
Marvel only recently released the first trailer for Avengers: Endgame but fans are already diving into their breakdowns of the tease. Everything from the appearance of Ronin (Clint Barton) to the final days of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is being analyzed for any clue about what’s to come. And while that’s a smart way to go about deducing information, there’s something a lot of fans are forgetting.
When it comes to Marvel movie trailers, they’re known to be vague. The executives over at Disney have learned from their past mistakes of revealing too much and they rectified that with two very misleading trailers for Avengers: Infinity War. It appears as though a similar approach is being made with Endgame but it may be for naught.

With so many spoilers being leaked over the past few months, Marvel’s attempt to keep the plot of Endgame secret might be a fruitless endeavor. There are obviously aspects no one can deduce but here’s everything we’ve determined so far.
Warning! Potential spoilers for Avengers: Endgame follow. You’ve been warned.
The trailer opens up to a weak Tony Stark as he prepares to live out his last few hours aboard the Milano. Tony is leaving a recording for Pepper in anticipation of his “drifting off” due to the oxygen supplies running out. He signs off with a final goodbye, emphasizing the impending end.
After Stark’s goodbye, he isn’t seen or heard from again in the Endgame trailer. This has led most viewers to believe Iron Man’s end is approaching. However, true Marvel fans know that Tony Stark won’t give so easily and he’ll find a way to get home. How he’ll get out of his latest predicament is anyone’s guess but the answer may have to do with Nebula.
For those who don’t recall, Nebula was standing alongside Stark during Thanos’ culling in Infinity War. The movie’s end didn’t reveal her next move but she’s definitely aboard the Milano again.
A very brief glimpse in the Endgame trailer depicts Nebula brushing her hand across a jacket — one that presumably belonged to one of her Guardians teammates. And most of them left their jackets aboard the ship before the fight with Thanos.
What that tells us is Nebula will board the spacecraft around the same time as Tony Stark. The Avengers: Endgame trailer doesn’t show them together but that’s probably because Nebula will be the key to escaping the vastness of space.
Another major mystery created by the Avengers: Endgame trailer is the unexplained transformation by Clint Barton aka Hawkeye. He hasn’t become an enhanced or anything like that but Clint has clearly assumed his Ronin alias from the comics.
Ronin (Jeremy Renner) only has a few seconds of screentime in the trailer, all of which show him slaying a group Yakuza but it’s integral nonetheless. Natascha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) stands behind Ronin as she watches him slash away. Unfortunately, the clip ends without showing how their reunion will play out.
The reason we don’t get to hear Ronin and Widow converse is that any dialogue they share will likely reveal where Clint was during Avengers: Infinity War. At the same time, Clint’s reason for becoming Ronin would be exposed.
With Ronin’s introduction being the vaguest moment in the Endgame trailer, it raises the most questions. There’s no telling why Clint has taken on this new superhero identity, though the logical explanation is that Natasha time-traveled to recruit this particular version of Clint.
With more than a few hints at time-traveling being brought up, there’s a distinct possibility that Natasha traveled to the past — or the future — to recruit Ronin onto the New Avengers.
Leaked set images from Endgame confirmed that Captain America (Chris Evans) and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) would return to the events of The Avengers, so the chances of Natasha Romanoff traveling to another time for Ronin are very good. There is, however, another explanation.
Aside from the rumors of time-travel, another theory making the rounds suggest that the remaining Avengers will travel to alternate dimensions. If that is the case with Avengers: Endgame, Ronin might be the Clint Barton of a different universe. Of course, we’ll probably have to wait until the movie’s premiere in April to learn the truth.
Avengers: Endgame opens in theaters on April 26, 2019.
