12. The way Aethelwold was killed

Aethelwold’s death was far from shocking. I expected it all the way through the season. What did surprise me was the way that it happened.

It was clear that Uhred and Brida would eventually kill him to allow Ragnar’s soul to go to Valhalla. Whether you believe in that or not, they did and it was a necessary plot point to make Aethelwold’s death mean something.

What I did think would happen was Uhtred pouring the blood over his sword and expertly assassinating the one-eyed coward. Instead, we got an expect throw of Thyra’s blood and then the sword. Aethelwold wouldn’t have seen it coming even if he had two eyes.

Be honest, though; you cheered in this moment, right?

11. Brida killing Storrie

Brida and Uhtred headed off to see Storrie to learn more about how to save Ragnar and get rid of Uhtred’s curse. While they couldn’t save Ragnar’s life, they had a chance of saving their souls. And yes, this reunion worked out as you would expect. Storrie tried to run away and was caught.

In the end, he gave up the method to help Ragnar but just as he was about to tell Uhtred how to break the curse, Bride attacked him. Killing him by strangulation, I sat there in shock. How was Uhtred going to learn about breaking his curse?

Well, Brida had the answers all along. She needed to kill Storrie to break her curse, even if she believes it’s too late for her. This helped lead to the unsurprising moment of Uhtred being the one to kill Skade.
