Disney hinting at a possible new friend for BB-8 in Episode IX
New reports have come in suggesting that beloved Star Wars droid BB-8 could be getting a friendly sidekick. It’s unclear who he and the sidekick would be following in the upcoming Episode IX.
Star Wars fans were first introduced to the friendly and lovable BB-8 in The Force Awakens BB-8 was then expected to face off against an evil robot from the First Order in The Last Jedi. A new report stemming from a recent Disney marketing summit is saying that BB-8 will finally have his own sidekick.
News of the sidekick began to surface on Reddit, when a user who attended the summit said that the droid would have a cone-shaped head, similar to that of a megaphone. The post also reported that the droid’s name would be “Dio,” or possibly “D-0.”
Pinewood executives spoke out about the droid, saying that they wanted the droid to have a similar ugly duckling type relationship, where BB-8 treats him as a child and “D-0” treats him as a parent and becomes attached to him.

BB-8 was one of the first characters fans were introduced to in the first trailer for The Force Awakens. This is the first set of droids presented to us since C-3PO and R2-D2 back in the original trilogy.
Disney ended up bringing back C-3P0 and R2-D2 for the new trilogy, though the main focus has been on BB-8 and its relationship with the heroes of the galaxy. BB-8 was supposed to face off against a villainous droid BB-9E but the droid ended up only having a short appearance.
