2. The Devil Wears Prada

Original Release Date: The Devil Wears Prada first made its premiere at LA Film Fest in Los Angeles on June 22, 2006, before receiving its theatrical release on June 30.

Box Office Earnings: Following its release ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, The Devil Wears Prada managed to remain in the Top 10 at the box office for the month of July, bringing in a worldwide gross of over $326 million against a $35 million budget. At the time, it was the highest-grossing film for Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Anne Hathaway.

Critical Acclaim: Believe it or not, The Devil Wears Prada wasn’t widely acclaimed by all critics, though the film did receive mostly favorable reviews. However, those reviews couldn’t have predicted that the film would win up a modern classic still beloved over 10 years after its release. The movie received two Academy Award nominations, Best Actress for Meryl Streep and Best Costume Design, and three Golden Globes — Best Motion Picture (Comedy), Best Actress (Comedy) for Meryl Streep, and Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt.

About the Role: As Andie Sachs, Anne Hathaway represented the moral center of the film and our entry point into the bustling world of fashion. Andy lands a coveted position as the second assistant to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the editor-in-chief of the influential Runway magazine. Much like in her breakthrough film The Princess Diaries, Hathaway plays the fish-out-of-water with relatable charm and holds her own with an icon.

Simply the Best: Hathaway might have shined boldest and brightest in Les Mis, but the film that holds the greatest place in the hearts of millions is The Devil Wears Prada. As Twitter periodically likes to remind the masses, Andy’s friends and boyfriend were actually the villains of the movie, since they were so selfish and unsupportive. Who could forget?

But her turn as Andy was exactly that: a turn in the right direction for her career. She quickly gained a reputation as a reliable movie star who not only worked with legends but was a legend in her own right.
