Dragon Ball Super: Broly is the ultimate showcase of why the Dragon Ball franchise is iconic.

Dragon Ball has been blowing minds since the 1980’s, and now decades since originally appearing, they have provided fans with their best work yet. The film titled Dragon Ball Super: Broly is the return (or newly crafted debut) of fan favorite Saiyan Broly who is essentially the anime definition of brute force.

When Broly was used in former Dragon Ball Z films, it wasn’t quite helmed by creator Akira Toriyama, and clearly, it left him feeling like he wanted to merge the character into his flourishing world now known as Dragon Ball Super. Now, years since his initial film debut, the story of the legendary Saiyan has been retold in the most marvelous way possible.

With the film hitting select theaters beginning January 12, 2019, I don’t want to spoil too much of the plot, but there are a few reasons I believe you should check it out for yourself next month.

Broly is ‘legendary’ in every sense

More from Movies

Broly isn’t your average Saiyan (not that there is an average one anyway) but his level of power is something that is achieved in a very unique method. When we meet him in a present-day setting, he has yet to attain Super Saiyan but in a very short time, his power grows to unknown heights and requires Vegeta and Goku to go all out just to stay alive during the explosive battle.

With his power being so uncharted, he struggles to maintain his state of mind, making Broly a complete powerhouse and deadly foe. As far as the outcome, you’ll have to see for yourself but I can say that this is one character that could be very deadly to the survival of our favorite warriors and humanity as a whole.

An epic battle that sets new standards for anime

Dragon Ball has always succeeded in the art of action anime, with Dragon Ball Z being some of the best examples. Dragon Ball Super has taken more time to showcase character development and changes, and in addition to the incomparable power levels, there are rarely high-stakes fights the way there used to be.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly is the exception to this, as more than half of the run time is dedicated to battles we’ve never seen. Vegeta gets his time to fight, Goku also clearly has his own battle, but even Frieza is wrangled into the action at one point with only those who can rival Broly being a part of this intense film.

Things go as far as showing Goku in peril that’s directly cause for concern, something unseen since his battles in DBZ years prior. As I watched the film the way it was intended to be seen (in theaters) there were moments where I continuously had to remind myself to blink so I wouldn’t risk missing any of the brilliant sequences.

Gogeta makes his first canon debut in an epic fashion

Gogeta (the fusion of Goku and Vegeta of course) finally makes a canon appearance similarly to Broly, but far more powerful than his previous incarnation. When it becomes apparent that alone Broly is nearly impossible to handle, the Saiyans must learn to merge if they want a chance at even staying alive against his power level.

When Gogeta appears in the film, it’s only a matter of time before a major clash between the Saiyan God and legendary Saiyan become unimaginably dangerous for all involved. The fight only proves progression with this fusion and changes the animation techniques to keep up with the powerhouses that sparks new peaks for DBS.

All in all, Dragon Ball Super: Broly is the best film for the entire franchise and hopefully suggests that we will be seeing more Dragon Ball in the future, but also unimaginable levels of power to keep our favorite heroes striving to be their absolute best.
