Golden Globes 2019: Biggest surprises and snubs
By Dan Girolamo
The biggest stars in film and television were honored at the 2019 Golden Globes. Here are the biggest surprises and snubs from the ceremony.
The top actors in the film and television industry packed The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, for the 2019 Golden Globes. The ceremony, hosted by Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, had its fair share of jaw-dropping moments throughout the night.
Here are the biggest surprises and snubs of the night.
Surprise: Bohemian Rhapsody wins Best Motion Picture – Drama
The film with the worst odds of winning ended up taking home the trophy as Bohemian Rhapsody shockingly won Best Motion Picture – Drama. The Queen biopic defeated critical favorites A Star Is Born and If Beale Street Could Talk.
What makes Bohemian Rhapsody‘s win surprising is the lack of critical acclaim surrounding the film. Despite being a box office success (grossing over $700 million worldwide), the film was met with mixed reviews, citing the uneven storyline and the portrayal of certain events in Mercury’s life (AIDS diagnosis, Mercury’s homosexuality, etc) as the root of the biopic’s problems.
Snub: Bill Hader and Henry Winkler for Barry
The Emmys were kind to both Bill Hader and Henry Winkler for their performances in Barry. However, the Golden Globes were not as rewarding as both Winkler and Hader were shut out in the comedy acting categories. In HBO’s Barry, Hader plays Barry Berkman, a down-and-out hitman who travels to Los Angeles for a job but ends up getting mixed up in the local arts scene and joins an acting class lead by Gene Cousineau, played by Winkler.

Surprise: Glenn Close defeats Lady Gaga for Best Actress in a Drama
By the look of her face after her name was announced as the winner, Glenn Close was just as shocked as everyone else. Lady Gaga was the heavy favorite to take home the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama for her superb performance in A Star Is Born. However, the 71-year-old Close upset Gaga and left the entire room stunned.
Close won for her portrayal of Joan Castleman in The Wife, a film that follows a wife as she questions her life choices when she travels to Sweden with her husband, who is set to accept the Nobel prize in Literature. The win marks Close’s third Golden Globe award.
Snub: A Star Is Born
The betting favorite to win multiple categories at the ceremony was A Star Is Born. The film was nominated for five Golden Globe Awards including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Original Song.
A Star Is Born won Best Original Song for “Shallow.” However, that would mark the film’s only win of the night as Bradley Cooper and company went home light on trophies.
Surprise: The Kominsky Method wins Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy
In a category full of heavyweight shows like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Good Place, it was the show lead by two acting veterans that nabbed the top prize at the Golden Globes 2019. Netflix’s The Kominsky Method upset the aforementioned Mrs. Maisel and The Good Place to win Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
The Kominsky Method stars Michael Douglas as Sandy Kominsky, a once successful actor who is now an acclaimed acting coach. Right by Kominsky’s side is his agent and friend, Norman Newlander, played by Alan Arkin.
