Unicorn Store, Brie Larson’s directorial debut, has been picked up by Netflix for a 2019 release.

Brie Larson has had an amazing past few years, including an Oscar win and being cast as the titular character in the first stand-alone movie for a female Marvel superhero, but many are unaware that she has also been working behind the camera. Unicorn Store, starring the first-time director herself, alongside Captain Marvel co-star Samuel L. Jackson and Joan Cusack, is the comedy screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017 and at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2018.

The announcement that Netflix had acquired distribution rights came on Jan. 9 when Larson was awarded the trailblazer award at the LA Online Film Critics Society awards.

More from Netflix

For a long time, the film was stuck in limbo. Fitting for a film whose main character, Kit (Larson), an art school dropout, is also stuck in limbo. Kit still lives with her parents and has more in common with five-year-olds than she does with adults her own age.

The film looks to be a quirky and charming story of a woman who just doesn’t want to grow up. The film’s narrative focus lies on a mysterious invitation she receives from a salesman (Jackson) that would fulfill one of her childhood dreams: To own a unicorn.

The film’s release on the streaming platform is TBD, but it is rumored that it will arrive in April.

So far, the film has fairly mixed reviews with a score of 65% on Rotten Tomatoes and a rating of 5.2/10 on IMDB.
