Star Trek spin-off show announced to focus on Section 31. Michelle Yeoh set to star as an agent of Starfleet’s covert ops and is said to expand upon her role in the series.

Star Trek steam rolls forward with CBS All Access as they announced how the spin-off show will expand on Michelle Yeoh’s role as a clandestine agent in Section 31, according to CBS Express. It was rumored last year that this would come to plan as a mirror universe version herself, Emperor Georgiou, was invited into Section 31 by the mysterious Leland character.

Executive producers that will be heading off the project are Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth. Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt will be scribing the series. Michelle Yeoh commented on how emphatic she was to be a part of the franchise.

"“I’m so excited to continue telling these rich Star Trek stories. Being a part of this universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes – certainly I believe it will go ‘where no WOMAN has ever gone before!”"

Section 31 has always intrigued me personally ever since I had seen it debut on DS9 with actor William Sadler who played Luther Sloan. We’ve had our share of Tom Clancy and Jason Bourne-type franchises of the entertainment industry, but should it be so shocking that the Federation would have its own clandestine organization doing its dirty work?

I would imagine this spin-off would give great satisfaction to Star Trek fans as this would delve into a possibly serious behind-the-scenes look of the Federation. There is so much story that can be told and to know there’s a darker side to the Federation makes it rather interesting, right?

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine had a few intriguing stories regarding Sloan’s creation of Section 31, but his history has remained a mystery. But in Michelle Yeoh’s role, her origin story won’t be much of a mystery.

We already know how she went from the former Captain on the Discovery to the mirror universe version.  She was then later taken back to the Discovery. That said, it would be interesting how the show will likely give great detail into Section 31 beyond its historical episodes in DS9 and the NX-01 Enterprise.
